GroupMe : Whatsapp Alternative

Have you heard about Whatsapp ? Whatsapp is a messenger for cross platform such as Blackberry, iPhone, Android, Nokia devices etc. You can send text, images, audio and video for free. Recently there was a news stating, Whatsapp users are now sending more than 1 billion messages everyday. Whatsapp is something similar to Apples iMessage or Blackberry messenger (BBM). With data internet connection enabled on your phone, you can send text/image/video/audio message to your friends on your contact book.

It actually overtakes the SMS feature on your phone. With the same internet data plan that you use for email and web browsing, there is no cost to message and stay in touch with your friends. WhatsApp Messenger users can send each other unlimited images, video and audio media messages. All you need to make sure is that all your friends have installed Whatsapp on their phones, that’s it. As it is available on all mobile platforms right from Nokia Symbian, Android, iPhone, Blackberry cross platforms there wouldn’t be any issue. Now today we have something similar to Whatsapp called ‘GroupMe’.

GroupMe is a group messaging that works on every platform. It is a cross platform application available for android, iPhone, blackberry, Windows phone etc. Start groups with the people already in your contacts. When you send a message, everyone instantly receives it. It’s like a private chat room that works on any phone.

Difference between Whatsapp and GroupMe is that, on groupme you can create groups from your contacts list and hit a message to specific groups. You can also share images, do conference calls as well. It’s not that you cannot do conference call on Whatsapp, it also supports it. Groupme is a service based on text messaging. Groupme allows you to share images and as well your locations.

  1. Androidage says:

I’ve been using Whatsapp on my Nokia E63 and its more than a app that we can share files to other end users instantly.

  2. Suraj Nair says:

I use Whatsapp on my android phone and nothing works better than that. Also, there is nothing new feature in group me app which will attract anyone to it.

  3. Rob says:

From my experience, whatsapp = limit 10 users per group, can’t have multiple admins, if you change mobile numbers before leaving groups they are stuck in there.

groupme has a website, you can use multiple phones but have them appear as the single number.

Group me’s map feature showing all group members on the same map is so much better than individual pics being sent.

So as of 2012, groupme has the edge but not the popularity.

    • OzMin says:

With GroupMe, you can’t share voice or video; WhatsApp can share voice and video.
Plus, GroupMe lost all my support when they got rid of the conference call feature. GroupMe is getting dumped.
