The HTML tag for contacting a person through email is when ever you link to the ‘mailto’ html tag with email address, it opens Microsoft Outlook to email the person when you click them. If you’re not using Outlook as your default, primary email service program, then you can change it easily in Google chrome with a simple extension that redirects the mailto links to open up in Gmail, Yahoo or any other email program than Outlook.

So when the user clicks the ‘Contact Me’, the browser asks the operating system to open the default mail client (mostly Outlook) and pre-fill some fields to allow for rapid deployment. How to avoid this and open by default in Gmail or Yahoo of your choice ? We can achieve this with a simple chrome extension.

Mailto is a simple chrome extension that redirects the mailto html link to open up in Gmail or any other email client than outlook. It makes mailto: links open in an online email program. Currently it supports AOL mail, Fastmail, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo mail and Zoho mail by default. You can also set a different email service yourself.

You can select the custom URL from the options panel and enter the URL of your compose email message link, so that when you click the mailto links, it will open up your custom email panel.
