There are many search engines that helps you to find relevant content on the web using the search spiders. But when you say ‘Search’ or ‘Search engine’, Google has become a synonym for it. Why is that so ? What makes Google so special ? What are the ultimate things that you can do with Google ? It is like you learn things from Google and help Google to improve their search spiders to help you better. Here I love to rant about Google search and how it helps me in day to day tasks.
You don’t have to worry about spelling when using Google search. Google’s spell checker automatically defaults to the most common spelling of a given word, whether or not you spell it correctly.
You can anytime see your search history. It provides you a separate place to store all your search histories, so that you can look back anytime. Google.com/history
Google maps, ultimate place to get address, phone numbers for a place or product. Just enter the product or place name long with zipcode or town name, you get the address with phone numbers.
Start always with the short keywords that will yield you broader results. then refine your results by adding more words. Don’t complicate yourself, just use the common words that you speak daily and put in the search to get better relevant results. Also keywords which you enter aren’t case sensitive. A search for new york times is the same as a search for New York Times. Also Google search ignores punctuation.
Let’s see some advanced search tips that you can do with Google. You can find for specific file types such as doc, pdf(mostly for ebooks search), ppt presentations etc. How to search for files based on extensions ? On Google search, adding filetype: and the 3-letter file abbreviation with your keyword will give you exact results.
If you want find similar websites that you like, with the help of Google, you can find similar websites. For example, if you’re a foodie and loves to cook, then finding a cooking recipe websites is so easy. Just add related:[insert URL] to locate similar websites. Example try this on search – related:simplyrecipes.com/recipes/perfect_guacamole/
Also if you want to find search results for the exact keyword then add quotation marks around the words. “madrasgeek”. If you want to know about certain things only from inside the website, then you can use site : in your search term. For example, apple iphone 5 site:engadget.com. Also exclude the words like ‘and’ ‘the’ from the search terms.
As you all know, with the Google image search you can search for images based on the exact size, color or type of photo or drawing. You can find the tools on the left panel where you can filter your image search. You can also find high resolution images with creative commons license.
On the Google search, for any searched terms > look to the left side where you can find More search tools link, click it to unhide more options.
My second most usage with Google search is to convert currency values, find out the current time on other countries, weather updates etc. You can easily use Google search as a conversion metrics. Convert any measurement – like miles to kilometers or ounces to liters – by typing in the number and unit of measurement. For example : 20 INR in USD, 5 miles to km, etc.
You can also get the real time stock quotes. Typing any ticker symbol into the search box will get you realtime stock quotes. Example : Type GOOG in your search and hit enter. You can also track your UPS, FedEx, or USPS packages by typing the tracking number directly into the search box. The results will show you the status of your shipment.
With operators like define : ‘keyword’ you can get the definitions for the keyword. As I have told above, you can use Google search for conversion metrics, similarly you can do math with Google search. If you don’t believe me, just use the search with ‘ 100*3.14-cos(83)= ‘ and hit the enter to know the result.
You can also get scores of your favorite game. Cricket, NBA, Olympics etc. Just typing the team or league into the search box will give you real time scores and schedules.
You can get to know the sunrise and sunset times of your city. To see the exact times of sunrises and sunsets in cities around the world, search sunrise or sunset followed by the city name. Example : sunrise chennai.
If you’re looking out for zipcodes for address locations, then use this service (India only) to get postal codes. If you want to know the city or location name with the zip code, then just enter the zip code in the search box and hit enter to know the location/city name.
Search on a movie name or just movie to see theater locations and showtimes in your area. To see flight schedules to or from a particular destination, type flights from or flights to followed by the city or airport of interest. Search demographic terms like population or unemployment rate, followed by a county, state or country, and you’ll get instant data about your chosen location directly.
For mobile users, Goggles is one of the best app. You can search the web using your phone camera. Just shoot the place in your camera and use Goggles to find out the place, its history and stuff. Similary, if you are looking out for the name of the place, just take a snap and search using the picture.
Google voice search. You don’t have to type anything, just using the voice command you can search Google. Finally with the instant Google search, it senses your search term before you complete the keyword in search box.
Some more jaw dropping facts about Google search : There are more than 1 billion searches each day on Google. Since 2003 Google has answered 450 Billion new unique queries (searches). The Instant Preview loads in 1/10th of a second on average. Google says ” 20% of unique queries are new to us every day.” Just for your calculation, every query has to travel on average 1,500 miles to get the answer back to the user. Google’s Caffeine index is more than 100 million gigabytes.
