Google following Facebook’s “Like” Feature Google +1 Button

It’s strange that Google who has been known for its innovations has almost copied the Facebook’s Like feature. If you are on Facebook, obviously you will know about the “Like” feature. It’s one of those innovative features which are not present in any other social networking site.

This can also considered as 2nd step by Google (after Social circle) in socializing search. Google has named this feature as “+1 button”. Google explains it as “The +1 button is shorthand for “this is pretty cool” or “you should check this out”. Click +1 to publicly give something your stamp of approval. Your +1’s can help friends, contacts, and others on the web find the best stuff when they search”. It’s as simple as that!

Give Recommendations

If you’re signed in to your Google account, then you can recommend search results or even websites (Site owners can embed +1 button in their websites) to your friends by clicking the +1 button beside each search result, don’t worry you can undo it at anytime. Your recommendations can be viewed by all your friends connected to your Google account through Gmail, Orkut etc services.

Get Recommendations

Whenever your friend +1’s a site, you can view your friend’s name and also aggregate count of how many +1’d the site. It’s just a measure of popularity of a website.

Show your +1’s

All your +1’s can be found under your public Google profile. In order to +1 a site also you need a public Google profile. There’s a separate tab which stores all your +1’s and you can show or hide that tab. It works just like your bookmarks list!

Personalizing +1 feature for non-Google sites

As I said +1 feature is also available in non-Google sites, by clicking +1 button you are showing your interest in displaying, sharing and recommending certain online content (including advertisements). So if you don’t want Google to consider your +1’s in personalizing your content, you can select the appropriate setting at Google accounts.

Are you ready to experiment this feature?

Google hasn’t announced any date for the release of this feature but I don’t think it will take more than a month. If you’re like me who wants to experiment the feature early, then you can join the +1 experiment here (click “join this experiment” under +1 button section). Note that it takes some time for the button to show up in the search results and it may also disappear as they are making improvements. If you’re facing any problems, you can fill the feedback form here.

Get +1 button for your site/blog

This is something interesting for Site/Blog owners, as Google didn’t mention when they will be releasing the +1 button officially, you can fill this form to get notified. You just need to enter your website address and E-mail and you’re done!
So do you think this new feature will have effect on Site rankings? Will you welcome the +1 button?
