Avoid Spam Comments on WordPress


Spam is always a pain and nuisance to everyone. Especially bloggers have more chance to experience it on their blogs. So, today we are going to cover up some points on how to fight against spam comments on WordPress.

The basic method without using any plugin is, Go to discussion settings and check in users must be registered and logged in to comment option. This basic step will avoid spam comments and also WordPress main strength is its plugins support, so instead of trying out the above one, you can use plugins that play a major role in avoiding spam comments. lets see ..

1. Akismet

Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not and lets you review the spam it catches under your blog’s “Comments” admin screen. By default WordPress installation akismet is installed, so all you need is to activate it by entering your WordPress.com API key.

2. WP-Recaptcha

WordPress reCAPTCHA Plugin plays as anti-spam for your comments section and registration forms. reCAPTCHA will stop all automated spam, and Akismet will stop any human-generated spam. This plugin also provides MailHide integration and also WordPress MU compatible.

3. Simple Trackback Validation

Simple Trackback Validation Plugin performs a simple but very effective test on all incoming trackbacks in order to stop trackback spam. This plugin checks if the IP address of the trackback sender is equal to the IP address of the webserver the trackback URL is referring to, and also there are many options available to find out invalid trackbacks etc.

4. Bad Behavior WordPress Plugin

Bad Behavior complements other link spam solutions by acting as a gatekeeper, preventing spammers from ever delivering their junk. This keeps your site’s load down, makes your site logs cleaner, and can help prevent denial of service conditions caused by spammers.

5. WP-SpamFree

An extremely powerful WordPress anti-spam plugin that eliminates blog comment spam, including trackback and pingback spam. It has Comment Blacklist option, support for contact forms, No captcha nothing, it works silently in the background, easy to install and totally free.

  6. Requiring people to login will decrease comments enormously – although I can see why bloggers go that route because dealing with 1000s of spam a day is getting really old.

    Akismet has flagged many of my regular readers who are bloggers and regular commentators as spammers. Searching for a solution we tested Bad Behavior and it REALLY behaved badly – locking us all out and being a real mess to recover. I wouldn’t recommend trying it except in a development blog.

    WP-SpamFree is business unfriendly. Try using words like Business, Marketing or Sales and it will tell you your comments are spammy.
