Twitter is an micro blogging tool and a incredible medium for listening, learning, and sharing. Some use it for marketing effectively and some for wrong methods. Rule #1

Think before you tweet – Twitter is a powerful online media, so before tweeting anything think twice. Remember, once it is out there… it is out there.

Rule #2

Avoid personal attacks – Do not abuse or insult other twitter users. There’s nothing wrong with having a controversial opinion, but you should be discussing the issues in a calm and mature manner. Attack the issue, not the person.

Rule #3

Do not tweet and drink – When you’re not calm and composed or when you’re drunk don’t start tweeting out. It’s like social suicide.

Rule #4

Instead of linking to your website all the time (shameless self promotion), help out the people with your knowledge.

Some very good recommendations in this article although I would think twice before using the f word on Twitter. It's not necessary to offend people just to use that word.

I disagree with #14. I absolutely detest the "Thank you for following me [url]". It feels spammy and really unnecessary. The rest of the list is useful, thanks.

17 Srivathsan GK December 28, 2009 at 1:54 pm

@Anonymous – Maybe, then don't mention any URL, just say thank you and some casual greets =)

It seems you've got the Twitter Golden Rules well covered. I have to agree with Anonymous that #14 could be problematic and I've been known to un-follow someone who sends me a generic "Thanks for following me, now visit my site at http://www.???.com" but if it's personalized then you might be able to make it work.

Really enjoyed your article on Twitter. Agree with Anonymous, dont like the automatic greeting. If you do message back, please try to personalise where possible!
